2008 Events

This provides you with a reminder of who we have had as guest speakers at the club and what activities had been provided for the club members in 2008.

This was our Christmas Party with the regular slot car racing and buffet. This proved to be as popular as ever with a record turnout for the racing. Thanks go to Nick Sismey for providing such a good race circuit and the ladies of the committee members for the food.

The results of the racing were:

1.      David Dabbs

2.      Andy Winterton

3.      Mick Howett

Fastest lap  - Andy Winterton

Our speaker this month was David Render. David has owned and raced many cars, mainly hillclimbs and sprints. We had an excellent evening as he gave us an illustrated talk about the cars he has owned. There were many unique pictures. David was a Captain in the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry during WW2 and as such we raised £100 for his charity The Sherwood Rangers Widows.

We ventured into the world of Drag Racing this month with a talk given by Andy Rogers and Kirsty Tramm of the Eurodragster.com website. Andy's vast experience of the sport together with some excellent video and presentation gave a very good talk.

Also this month a number of our members acted as marshalls at the Lola 50th celebration event in Huntingdon when a number of the cars produced by Lola were driven through the streets of the town.

Our speaker this month was James Beckett, Assistant Secretary of the BRDC. James gave a very interesting talk about his racing and rallying experiences. He also talked about the Formula Ford festival and other race meetings that he organises.

A last minute change of venue due to the particularly unsettled weather saw us have the BBQ at John Cappit's Farm in Northorpe this year.  Here we enjoyed some fantastic food cooked as ever by Terry and Margaret, and were able to shelter from the chill evening wind and occasional shower in John's Barn.. Thanks must go to John and Clare for allowing us to use this facility, to those who brought their treasured cars / lorries along for us all to see and to everyone who first helped set up and then clear away after the evening.

Instead of meeting at the Red Hall this month we visited the Lincolnshire Road Transport Museum at North Hykeham. This is a very interesting collection and proved to be an enjoyable evening.

June 15th saw the third Bourne Classic Car and Bike Show. Despite one or two showers the show proved to be another great success. The many spectators had a wide variety of vehicles to admire, entertainment provided by the jazz band and Punch & Judy show, together with an increased number of craft stalls.

This month we changed sport, with a talk from Graham Richardson and Richard Hall. Graham is a Bobsleigh Driver and has represented Great Britain in Europa Cup and World Cup competitions from 1993 – 1998.

Graham was the Manager and Ice-Coach for the Great Britain Junior team 1999 – 2007

Founded the Icerush Team in 2005, and was part of the 2-man European Senior Champions in 2007 with Richard.

Richard who is the Brakeman started bobsleighing in 1993, has represented Great Britain 1994 – 1997 and was the RAF Champion Brakeman 1994 - 1996

The speaker was Pat Thomas, who gave an illustrated talk about the development of the Lotus M100 Elan. Pat has spent many years working with Lotus cars.

Our speaker this month was Ian Richardson. Ian’s talk covered the development of Jet Turbines for model aircraft and techniques used for producing scale models for competition.

Ian has been building model aircraft for over 40 years, specializing in jets for the last 20 years.

Ian has been very successful in international competitions. He brought his model F-86F Sabre, from the Korean War era. This model is capable of speeds over 200 mph and many acrobatic manoeuvres.

Our speaker this month was Mike Garton, who entertained us with his experiences from racing and scrutineering. Mike is a MSA scrutineer.

The monthly meeting was an open meeting, giving members chance to meet and have a chat with a drink and see some new films.

RML - number of the members had a very enjoyable and interesting visit to Ray Mallock Ltd at Wellingborough. We were able to see a wide variety of the work carried out by this successful racing company.

Karting - another successful Karting evening was held at Langar. The results of the racing were:

1st Stuart Marshall

2nd Mike Reynolds

3rd Richard Bostock.
